Zeaxanthin
Tagetes Erecta Extract
Zeaxanthin: a versatile natural substance
Zeaxanthin is one of the most common carotenoid alcohols found in nature. It
is one of the two primary xanthophyll carotenoids contained within the retina of the eye.
Since the human body cannot produce Zeaxanthin itself, it has to
be ingested with food.
Zeaxanthin is obtained from Tagetes Erecta, also known as the Mexican Marigold or the Aztec Marigold. This plant has been used for medicinal purposes and as a natural dye for a long time. Apart from Zeaxanthin it contains various types of carotenoids, like Lutein.
Zeaxanthin supports eye health and can reduce skin inflammation
Zeaxanthin is not only a very strong anti-oxidant,
but it also eficiently filters blue light. Studies showed that Zeaxanthin can reduce UVB-induced skin inflammation and improve skin tone after oral intake. Together with Lutein Zeaxanthin has shown in several observational studies a positive effect at the treatment of AMD (age-related macular degeneration). It is supposed that these effect depends on the anti-oxidative impact. Zeaxanthin helps, in combination with Lutein, to filter damaging light and to quench photochemically induced active oxygen species in the eye.
A daily intake of 2 mg is recommended.
